Gent Cakaj (born July 6, 1990 in Pristina , Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ) is an Albanian politician ( PS ). The Kosovar Albanian  has been the deputy head of the Albanian Foreign Ministry since the beginning of 2019 .

biography

Gent Cakaj was born and raised in Pristina, Kosovo. His family is originally from Gjakova, his father Shkëlzen is a recognized scientist in the field of communication technology .

In 2012 he had a Bachelor in Philosophy of the University of Prishtina acquired. In 2015 he obtained a master's degree in political science from the Central European University in Budapest . He also graduated in 2016 a legal bachelor course at a private university in Pristina and 2017 studies ( Research Master ) in philosophy from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium from.

In January 2018 he was hired by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama as political advisor for European integration and foreign policy. He also acted as Albania's national coordinator for the Western Balkans economic area . In June 2018 he was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister under Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati in the Rama II government cabinet.

In a government reshuffle in January 2019, Cakaj should take over from Bushati. However, President Ilir Meta refused to confirm Cakaj's appointment. The young Kosovar lacks credibility and experience in politics, diplomacy and administration. There were also differences in Kosovo politics. Ilir Meta himself was only four years older when he was appointed Foreign Minister in 2002, but at that time already had experience as Prime Minister .

As a result, Rama took over the office of foreign minister and on January 23, immediately after his confirmation, transferred the leadership of the foreign ministry to his deputy Cakaj. Rama publicly stated that he was only acting de jure as foreign minister. In addition to Cakaj, Education Minister Besa Shahini also comes from Kosovo.

In the Albanian and German-speaking media, Cakaj is regularly referred to as the “Albanian Foreign Minister”.

In Albanian foreign policy, 2019 was marked by the failure to start accession negotiations with the European Union , which had long been expected. Albania will assume the chairmanship of the OSCE in 2020 .
