Niko Aleks Peleshi (born November 11, 1970 in Korça ) is an Albanian politician ( PS ). From 2013 to 2017 he held the office of Deputy Prime Minister in the Rama I cabinet . From September 2017 to December 2018 he was Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development in the Rama II cabinet .

education

Peleshi graduated from the Raqi Qirinxhi High School in his native Korça in 1989 with very good grades. He then studied electrical engineering at the Polytechnic University of Tirana .

After completing his studies, he first worked in the commercial sector of Korça before taking up a position in the city administration ( Bashkia ) in 2001. Until 2004 he headed the office for trade and industry.

Political career

Peleshi's political career began in October 2004 when he was appointed Prefect of Qark Korça and was able to serve for one year. He was then elected chairman of the Socialist Party in the city of Korça.

Niko Peleshi ran in the local elections in February 2007 as a candidate for mayor of Korça. He was supported by his member party as well as four other social democratic and one liberal parties. Peleshi was able to unite around 57 percent of the vote and thus won against the candidate of the Democratic Party , Gjergji Papa . In 2011 he was confirmed for a second term.

Niko Peleshi has been a member of the executive committee of the Socialist Party of Albania since 2012.

In 2013, Peleshi was elected to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe and is one of four representatives of Albania.

On September 7, 2013, Niko Peleshi resigned from his office as mayor of Korça, to be elected deputy to the newly elected Prime Minister Edi Rama from Kuvendi i Shqipërisë on September 15 and sworn in by the president .

In May 2017, he was replaced by the non-party Ledina Mandija after socialists and democrats agreed that the opposition could appoint seven new ministers for a “technical government” to ensure that the elections were carried out correctly.

After the new elections in the summer of 2017, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was transferred to him. After a period of prolonged student protests, Rama dismissed eight ministers on December 28, 2018. Niko Peleshi was also one of the dismissed ministers. Rama explained the change in view of the upcoming local elections in June 2019.

Private life

Niko Peleshi is married to Amarda Peleshi. The two have a daughter, Aleksia, and two sons, Stiv and Johan. Niko Peleshi speaks fluent English and can brittle German and Greek.
