Saimir Tahiri

Saimir Bashkim Tahiri (born October 30, 1979 in Tirana ) is an Albanian politician ( PS ). Between 2013 and 2017 he was Minister of the Interior in the Rama I cabinet under Prime Minister Edi Rama .

Education and political career

Tahiri studied law at the Law Faculty of the University of Tirana , and then completed postgraduate studies there. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in law.

Tahiri was elected to the Kuvendi i Shqipërisë for the first time in the parliamentary elections in 2009 as a representative of Qark Tirana . From 2009 to 2013 he was deputy group leader of the Socialist Party in parliament and also a member of the parliamentary commission on legal issues, public administration and human rights. At the same time, Tahiri is President of the Socialists in Tirana Qark .

On July 31, 2013 Edi Rama announced the division of ministries in his future government. Saimir Tahiri was therefore proposed as Minister of the Interior, which was also approved by a majority of Parliament on September 15, 2013, and he was then sworn in by the President . The next day, Tahiri officially took over the Ministry of the Interior, succeeding Flamur Noka ( PD ). In March 2017, he abdicated and left Fatmir Xhafaj the post of Minister of the Interior to run as a candidate in the local elections in Kavaja , where he was defeated by the Democratic candidate , Isa Sakja . In the elections in 2017 he was elected to parliament again.

On May 3, 2018, Tahiri resigned from parliament to face legal allegations that he was involved in drug dealing.

Allegations of criminal activity

Prosecutors brought charges against Saimir Tahiri, who was protected by parliamentary immunity , in October 2017 after allegations emerged that he was involved in drug dealing. Albanian drug traffickers who had been over-served by the local police in Italy repeatedly mentioned Tahiri's name and that he had received a lot of money in secretly recorded conversations. Tahiri protested his innocence.

Tahiri was found guilty of abuse of office in September 2019 and sentenced to three years and four months in prison on probation . He was acquitted of charges of international drug trafficking and involvement in a criminal organization. Tahiri announced that it would appeal the verdict. The opposition describes the verdict as too mild, the chairman of the opposition Democratic Party , Lulzim Basha , suspects that Tahiri was being protected by Prime Minister Edi Rama .
