Valentina Leskaj (born November 1, 1948 in Tepelena , Albania ) is an Albanian politician and a member of the Socialist Party of Albania . In April 2017 she decided not to stand in the parliamentary elections in June 2017 and to finish her 16-year parliamentary work.

Valentina Leskaj is a committed peace politician , women's rights activist and European politician . Between 2015 and 2017 she was Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and since 1994 Vice President and co-founder of the UNESCO Center for Women and Peace in the Balkans.

Life

Economics professor, women's rights activist, peace and European politician

Valentina Leskaj studied economic policy at the University of Tirana Business School and completed a postgraduate degree at Rutgers University in New Jersey .

Until the fall of the dictatorial regime in Albania in 1990/1991 , she was a professor at the Faculty of Economics, where she studied herself.

When Albania tried to transform itself politically, socially and economically in the 1990s, Leskaj was involved in women's rights work. Together with other politicians and activists from the Balkans , she founded the UNESCO Center for Women and Peace in the Balkans in the Greek city ​​of Thessaloniki in 1994 . Since then she has been vice president of this organization.

Between 1995 and 2002 she headed the Center for Population and Development (Qendra për Popullsinë dhe Zhvillimin) in Tirana , a non-governmental organization that advocates women's rights in Albania, among other things.

From 1997 to 2002, she also headed the Forum of NGOs in Albania .

From 2013 to 2017 she was a member and president of the Albanian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, from 2015 she was also vice-president of this assembly.

Parliamentary work, minister and socialist party activities

Valentina Leskaj first appeared on the political stage in 2001. That year she was elected to the Albanian parliament, the Kuvendi i Shqipërisë , as a member of the Socialist Party of Albania for Qark Vlora . She was re-elected in the following parliamentary elections in 2005, 2009 and 2013 . She was therefore a member of parliament for legislative periods V, VI, VII and VIII. On April 29, 2017, Leskaj told media representatives that she would not run again for a fifth legislative period. However, she wants to continue to be active in the Socialist Party.

In 2002 Valentina Leskaj was brought into the government by the then Prime Minister Fatos Nano ( PS ): until 2004 she was Minister for Labor and Social Affairs. In 2004 she then headed the Parliamentary Commission for Labor and Social Affairs and the Commission for European Integration . This was followed by the leadership of the Parliamentary Commission for Education and the Media between 2005 and 2009 - during the democratic Berisha I cabinet .

Valentina Leskaj has always been one of the leading figures of the Socialist Party. Between 2007 and 2009 she was the Socialist Group President. In 2015, she was also elected Deputy Speaker of Parliament. She shared this office with Shpëtim Idrizi ( PDIU ) and Edmond Spaho ( PD ), while Ilir Meta ( LSI ) was President of Parliament. When Ilir Meta was elected President in April 2017 , Valentina Leskaj chaired the extraordinary plenary session for the presidential election as Deputy Speaker of Parliament. In some circles, Valentina Leskaj was also considered a possible candidate for the office of head of state.
