Majlinda Enver Bregu (born May 19, 1974 in Tirana ) is an Albanian politician ( PD ) and social scientist. Between 2007 and 2013 she headed the Ministry for European Integration in the Berisha I and II cabinet . At the same time she held the office of government spokeswoman.

Life

education

Majlinda Bregu studied social science at the University of Tirana between 1992 and 1996 . In 1997 she then devoted herself to various internships and courses at various educational institutions around the world, for example at McGill University in Montreal , at the Nova Institute in Oslo , at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt an der Oder, among others, which she completed in 2004.

In 2003, she completed her studies in social policy, which she began in 2001, with a master's degree at the University of Tirana. A year later she finished her studies at the University of Urbino with a doctoral thesis on Albanian prostitution in Italy .

Work as a social scientist

Bregu is committed to social equality for women in Albania. Between 1996 and 2005 she was a lecturer at the University of Tirana and lectured at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Methods of Research and Gender Issues . In 2004 she was national coordinator of the Gender Institute at the University of Tirana for one year.

In addition to her work as a social scientist, Majlinda Bregu worked in various media between 1992 and 2005 and published many articles on this topic.

Political beginnings

In January 2004, Bregu entered Albanian politics. She was elected social policy coordinator in the Political Orientation Committee of the Democratic Party of Albania (PD). In April of the same year she became a member of the National Council of the PD.

When the Democrats were able to regain power for the first time in years in 2005, Majlinda Bregu was elected as a member of the PD in the Albanian parliament in the parliamentary elections in July . She is still a member of parliament today.

Minister for European Integration

After the 2005 elections, Bregu held three offices until March 2007. She was president of the Albanian parliamentary delegation in the European Parliament , a member of the Albanian parliamentary commission on health and social issues and president of the sub-commission on children and gender equality. When the Berisha I cabinet was restructured in March 2007 , Bregu was appointed head of the Ministry for European Integration and at the same time became government spokeswoman. She holds these two posts to this day.

In the parliamentary elections in July 2009 she was confirmed as a member of the PD.

As minister, Majlinda Bregu leads the integration of Albania into the structures of the European Union . Her term of office included the exemption of visas for Albanian citizens when entering the Schengen states in 2008 and Albania's formal application for EU membership on April 28, 2009.

In 2013 she was replaced by Klajda Gjosha in the Ministry of Integration.

Private

Majlinda Bregu is married and has two children. She speaks English, Italian and Spanish as foreign languages.
