However, he only held this office for three days. When the Democrats won the first free elections in Albania in 1992, former student leader Sali Berisha succeeded Islami as head of state. After that, things calmed down around Kastriot Islami. It was not until the Socialists were able to win the 1997 elections that Islami held government offices again, including as Minister of State between 1997 and 1998 , as Vice Prime Minister between April and October 1998 and as Minister of Finance from 2002 to 2003. Role in the political crisis from 2009

After the parliamentary elections in June 2009, Albania fell into a deep political crisis that continues to this day. Among other things, the boycott of parliament by the socialists from summer 2009 was one of the fundamental factors that initiated the crisis. When parliament met again for the first time after the local elections on May 26, 2011, Islami and his party colleague Andis Harasani opposed party leader Edi Rama's call for a boycott . The two of you were the only ones to represent the opposition. Since then, the already strained intra-party relations between Rama and the two have deteriorated. The Socialist Party even threatened to expel the two MPs.
