Helena Kadare (* 1943 in Fier as Elena Gushi ) is an Albanian writer , screenwriter and translator .

biography

Elena Gushi completed her secondary education in Elbasan and studied Albanian literature at the University of Tirana . She then worked as a journalist and editor at a publishing house. First she wrote short stories and short stories. As the first woman in Albania she wrote the novel Difficult Birth (Një lindje e vështirë) in 1970 .

She has been married to the Albanian writer Ismail Kadare since October 1963 , with whom she lived in Paris from October 1990 to 1999. In 2002 she published the novel Married couple (Bashkëshortët) in the Albanian publisher Onufri . Her novel Eine Frau aus Tirana (Një grua nga Tirana) was published in German in 2009. She translates one book each by Tanizaki Jun'ichirō and Isaac Bashevis Singer into Albanian . The memoir Too Little Time (Kohë e pamjaftueshme. Kujtime) appeared in Paris in 2010 in the French language Le temps qui manque .

The daughter Besiana Kadare, b. 1972, studied literature at the Sorbonne (Paris IV) . In 2005 she worked at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and in 2008 at the Albanian Embassy in France. From 2011 to summer 2016 she was appointed Ambassador of Albania to Cuba. Since July 2016 she has been Permanent Representative of Albania to the United Nations and Vice President of the General Assembly of the United Nations .
