Rexhep Qemal Meidani (born August 17, 1944 in Tirana , Albania ) is a former Albanian politician. He was President of the Republic of Albania from 1997 to 2002 .

Meidani is a physicist . He graduated from the University of Tirana in 1966 and later did a postgraduate course at the University of Caen in France (1974). Until 1996 he was a professor at the University of Tirana, among other things as dean of natural sciences.

In the first multi-party elections in Albania in 1991, he was chairman of the central electoral commission and subsequently a member of the government of Ramiz Alia . From 1992 he was particularly committed to human rights . In 1996 he joined the Socialist Party of Albania (PS).

After the unrest in June 1997, Meidani was elected to the Albanian parliament in the extraordinary elections. This Parliament elected him President on July 24, 1997 . His presidency is particularly notable for the new Albanian constitution , which was adopted by the Albanian people in November 1998.

In 2002 he was not re-elected because the leaders of the PS and the Democratic Party (PD) had agreed on Alfred Moisiu as the new president. In autumn 2003, Meidani ran for chairmanship of the PS, but lost to long-time chairman and prime minister of Albania Fatos Nano .
