Peter Schubert (diplomat)

Peter Schubert (born February 4, 1938 in Dresden ; † October 1, 2003 in Berlin ) was an albanologist . He worked for more than 35 years in the diplomatic service of the GDR and was, among other things, ambassador to Albania .

Life

From 1956 to 1959, Peter Schubert was one of the first Germans to study Albanian language , literature and history at the University of Tirana, which has just opened . In 1961 he obtained his diploma in linguistics at the Humboldt University in Berlin with a thesis on the Albanian alphabet .

In 1962, Schubert joined the GDR diplomatic service and worked in the Foreign Ministry until 1971. During this time he was stationed twice in Tirana. 1971–1973 he did postgraduate studies at the Diplomatic Academy of the Foreign Ministry of the Soviet Union in Moscow . Until 1989 he worked again as a Balkan expert for the GDR Foreign Ministry. 1989–1990 his diplomatic career reached its climax and its end: Peter Schubert was the last ambassador of the GDR in Tirana. In this role he also experienced the collapse of the communist systems in East Germany and Albania .

The German reunification forced a complete professional reorientation for the GDR diplomat. Schubert used his expert knowledge and his roots in Albania as a consultant for politics and economy and was involved in research projects related to Albania and Kosovo at the Science and Politics Foundation .

In Albania, Peter Schubert was highly valued as a friend and advisor by scientists and politicians from various parties.
