Michael Schmidt-Neke

Michael Schmidt-Neke (born July 5, 1956 in Baden-Baden ) is a German historian and albanologist .

Life

Schmidt-Neke graduated from high school in Hohenbaden Baden-Baden in 1975 and visited Albania for the first time in June 1975. He then studied history and ancient languages at the University of Freiburg and learned Albanian on his own . Supervisor of his dissertation emergence and expansion of royal dictatorship in Albania (1912-1939) was Gottfried Schramm .

Around 1980 he took part twice in international seminars at the University of Pristina . With the support of the Institute for Languages ​​at the University of Bonn , he was able to establish contact with the Albanian Academy of Sciences . An invitation from the then President of the Academy, Aleks Buda , gave him access to sources in Albanian libraries, on the basis of which he could write his dissertation.

Schmidt-Neke worked from 1988 to 1993 as a scientific editor on the Southeast Europe Handbook led by Klaus-Detlev Grothusen at the University of Hamburg as a long-term project , in which he supervised the volumes on Bulgaria and Albania and, in particular, several chapters on the Albania volume contributed to the country's political and social system.

Since 1995 he has worked as a consultant for education, science and culture in the parliamentary group of the SPD in Kiel .

He was chairman from 1990 to 1993 and has been vice chairman of the German-Albanian Friendship Society (DAFG) since 1999 as well as a member of the editorial board of the DAFG magazine Albanische Hefte .
