Gold boats from Torshøj

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The gold boat from Nors , even gold boats from Torshøj ( Danish Guldfund ved Torshøj ) called, represent a significant prehistoric sites in Denmark represents. 1885 were almost one hundred small, the other very similar, made of thin sheet gold filigree in the form of boat hulls articles made near a grave mound , Torshøj near Nors in Thy , about seven kilometers from Thisted in North Jutland , was found by accident while mining gravel . The hill used to form a group with five others, which has now been destroyed by gravel mining.

On May 12, 1885, two workers, J. Lukassen and H. Jensen, excavated gravel near the hill. About 30–40 cm below the surface of the earth and about 4 m east of the hill mentioned, they came across a clay pot covered with a flat stone. The pottery was destroyed during the salvage, the contents fell out. The 88 filigree ship- like structures, the largest about 17 cm long, are made of thin sheet gold and some are decorated with circular ornaments. The railing and the bulkheads are represented by thin bronze bands. Presumably they were buried as an offering . However, the mythological or religious background of the objects dated to the Late Bronze Age or the Early Iron Age is not known. The originals are in the Danish National Museum in Copenhagen, five copies of gold boats ( Danish Guldbådene ) can be seen in the Thisted Museum .

The finders were reimbursed for the gold value (480 kroner) and a reward (20 kroner; the hourly wage for unskilled workers was around 20 ore). In the same month they made another find a few meters away, a gold bracelet weighing almost 400 grams (for which they received 891 crowns).
