Gëzim Hajdari (born February 25, 1957 in Lushnja ) is an Albanian writer and translator who has lived in Italy since 1992 .

Life

Gëzim Hajdari was born into a family of former large landowners whose lands had been confiscated during the communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha . He attended - after elementary and middle school - a commercial high school. He studied Albanian literature at the University of Aleksandër Xhuvani in Elbasan ; After emigrating to Italy, he graduated from La Sapienza University in Rome with a degree in modern Italian literature.

After the final fall of the communist regime in Albania, Hajdari was one of the founding members of two opposition parties, the Democratic Party and the Lushnjas Republican Party , in the winter of 1991, and he was elected provincial secretary. In the same year he founded the opposition weekly Ora e Fjalës with a friend , where he became deputy director. At the same time he wrote for the national newspaper Republika . In the elections in early 1992 he was run as a candidate for the Republican Party. In the course of his activities as a politician and exponent of the opposition, he repeatedly and publicly denounced the dark machinations of the old Hoxha nomenclature - as well as those of the regime operating behind the mask of post-communism. As a result of repeated massive threats, he was forced to leave his country in April 1992.

In Albania he had worked, among other things, as a worker in agriculture (for example in the drainage of swamp areas), as a warehouse worker and accountant. He did two years of military service. In the early 1990s he taught literature at a high school. In Italy he worked as a groom, farm worker, construction worker and in a printing company.

Since then he has been making a living as a freelance writer and translator. He writes in Albanian and Italian. Poems have been translated into several languages. Invitations from all over the world have taken him to many countries for readings and lectures, but not to Albania. There, his critical work is mostly ignored by the political and cultural society.

Gëzim Hajdari is President of the Centro Internazionale Eugenio Montale . Because of his literary merits, he was made an honorary citizen of his place of residence, Frosinone . Hajdari is counted among the most important contemporary poets and has received numerous literary awards.
