By the Republic of Moldova breakaway Transnistrian Moldovan Republic , shortly Transnistria, awards since 1992 own license plate that the shape and design of Moldovan number plates are similar. Transnistrian license plates correspond to the European standard size of 520 mm × 112 mm and usually show black letters on a white background. As in Moldova, a variant of the German DIN script is used.

License plate design

The signs show the simplified flag of Transnistria on the left edge (without hammer, sickle and star), a hologram badge with the repetition of the number plate combination and a vertical black dividing line. The label initially consists of a letter that indicates the precise origin of the vehicle. This is followed by three consecutive digits and two more letters.

In the case of two-line signs, the flag, badge and the two serial letters are in the bottom line. Two-line license plates are also issued for motorcycles, but only show two letters and three digits. License plates for mopeds only show one letter and three digits and do not use any symbols.

Since August 2012, Transnistria has also had the option of receiving a license plate of your choice for a fee , with which the combination can be freely selected.

Authority registration number

By 2012, there were authorities mark where the first letter was missing and at the end of the letters CA ( russ . С лужебный а appeared втомобиль, company car). The signs were abolished in early 2012.

Authority vehicles are currently given normal serial number plates or special plates from which the respective authority can be read.

• The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for example, is now using license plates which, in turn, are strongly based on the Moldovan diplomatic license plates . They show the letters CD in dark blue, followed by three and then two numbers.
• For vehicles of Defense, among others, the abbreviation is MO ( russ . М инистерство о бороны, Ministry of Defense) awarded.

Before the reform, the Ministry of Defense used plates that resembled Soviet signs from 1958. They showed two pairs of digits and the combination MO .

• License plates for police vehicles have a light blue background. They show the letters AM , BM , EM , KM , PM , CM , TM (regional police) or MM (state police) and three digits. The combination TT is used for police motorcycles .
• Government vehicles have three digits and the coat of arms of Transnistria on the signs.

International use of the Transnistrian license plates

Transnistrian license plates are only valid in Abkhazia , Russia , South Ossetia , Belarus and Ukraine . When distinguishing signs is MD used for Moldova. There are also abbreviations in the Moldovan registration system for the Transnistrian regions. In March 2013 it was decided to introduce neutral license plates for vehicles that transport goods or people between the Moldovan heartland and Transnistria. These signs have no regional coding or any other symbolism. They start with the letters AB and show five digits.
