Portuguese license plates are insurance license plates and do not provide any information about place or region.

The number plates have consisted of three groups of two characters each since 1937. There is a short hyphen between the individual groups. The system started with the scheme AA-12-34, was converted to 1992 12·34·ABand has been since 2005 12·AB·34. When these combinations are also exhausted, there will be labels with two pairs of letters according to the model for the first time AB·12·CD.

Until March 3, 1992, license plates were issued with a black base color and white lettering, the two letters encoding the region. With the change to the number-number-letter format, the colors were also swapped. The signs now have black letters on a white background. In addition, a blue field with the twelve European stars and the country code P has been added to the left.

Since 1998, the year (above) and month (below) of the first registration of the vehicle have been noted in a yellow stripe on the right edge.

Some former Portuguese colonies such as Mozambique , Angola , Macau and Cape Verde still have license plates based on the old black license plates.

The license plates of the trailers (with the exception of small car trailers) also have the Europe field with the "P". However, one or two letters with up to six subsequent digits follow before the yellow stripe with the registration data concludes the license plate. The letter or letters indicate the registration district.

Small car trailers do not have their own license plate. You will receive a repeat license plate for your respective towing vehicle. The registration number of the towing vehicle and the repeating registration number of the car trailer must match. When using a different towing vehicle, the repetitive registration number of the car trailer must be changed.

Two-wheelers

License plates for two-wheelers have the same groups of letters and numbers as normal license plates, have two lines and show neither the euro field nor the registration date. Signs for two-wheelers with a displacement of less than 50 cm³ have a yellow background. Until 2006, signs with the combination 1-xxx 23-45were issued for two-wheelers , with the letters encoding the place of registration. For two-wheelers less than 50 cm³ the background was white, for all others it was yellow.

Special characteristics

  • The Portuguese armed forces use the abbreviations ME, MG and MX for the army , AP for the navy and AM for the air force . Each according to the scheme ME·12·34.
  • The Guarda Nacional Republicana uses license plates in the format GNR A-01up to GNR Z-9999.
  • Diplomatic license plates are written in red and initially show three digits that indicate the country of origin. This is followed by the letters CD for diplomats , CC for members of the consulate or FM for other embassy staff and another three-digit number.
  • Export indicators initially show a combination of numbers. A hyphen is followed by the regional letter or letters. The background of the signs is yellow, and on the right edge there is a white box with the letters EXP and the expiry date.
  • The vehicle of the Portuguese President shows the letters PR in silver on black and the national coat of arms in between.
