Cape Verdean license plates have a black background with white writing. Some signs show a bar on the left, based on the Euro license plate , which represents the national flag .
Current license plates are divided into three pairs of characters according to the AB-12-CD pattern. The first two letters indicate the corresponding island. There are a total of eight approval districts.
BR - Brava
BV - Boa Vista
FG - Fogo
SA - Santo Antão
SL - Sal

SV - São Vicente
Vehicles used by the armed forces have license plates that begin with FA for port. Forças Armadas and show two two-digit numbers.
Diplomatic license plates show red letters on a white background. They start with the letters CD . This is followed by a two-digit number indicating the country of origin and a sequential number.
Government signs have a yellow background and, after the normal combination, show the letter G , for Governo . The President's vehicle has the combination PR CV (for Presidente da República de Cabo Verde ).
Older license plates are based on the pattern CV x-1234, where CV stands for Portuguese Cabo Verde . For x either the letters B or S appeared. They coded the two main island groups Barlavento and Sotavento .
The island / archipelago of the first registration of the vehicle in Cape Verde is decisive for the island identification.
