License plate (Tunisia)
Tunisian license plates are generally based on the European standard dimensions of 110 mm × 520 mm. Regular license plates show white or silver-colored letters on a black background and are thus reminiscent of the old license plates of the former colonial power France . The usual signs start with a two- or three-digit serial number followed by the country name in Arabic تونس. The sign ends with a four-digit number. When all 9999 combinations of a series are used up, the series number is increased by 1. The combination “74 1” follows “73 9999”. The origin of the vehicle cannot be derived from the license plate, whereas the age of the vehicle can be narrowed down due to the allocation practice. The series number 166 was reached in mid-June 2013.
License plates for rental cars only stand out from normal license plates because of their blue background color.
For other vehicle groups there are license plates based on the pattern “1234 AB”, with the two letters encoding the vehicle type.
