Like some other African countries, Tanzanian license plates also use a variant of the German FE script . The license plates of the two states Tanganyika and Zanzibar differ in some points.

Tanganyika

The background is yellow for private vehicles and white for commercial vehicles. Public transport vehicles have red signs, United Nations vehicles blue, diplomatic license plates have a green background and military license plates black. On the left they show the flag of Tanzania . Since the year 2000, with the exception of the military license plates, all signs have started with the letter T followed by three digits and three letters, with sequential counting up. There is also a hologram seal above the flag or on two-line signs on the right-hand side. Diplomatic license plates show three digits after the mandatory T , the letters CD and another three digits. The first number block encodes the country of origin. Marks of the armed forces have black plates with white text.

Early license plates in Tanganyika had white lettering on a black background, following the British model . These were later replaced by yellow signs with two letters and a combination of numbers. In the 1980s the combination was expanded to Txx 1234. Private vehicles wore yellow signs, and white plates were issued for buses, taxis and rental cars. In the 1990s, the order of the letters was reversed so that the number pad was now in front of the letters.

Zanzibar

The license plates on Zanzibar and Pemba have a similar structure. However, in addition to the flag of Zanzibar , the coat of arms and the reduced letters EAZ for East Africa Zanzibar appear on the signs . The combination starts with a Z , followed by three digits and two letters. In contrast to Tanganyika, private vehicles on Zanzibar receive white signs and commercial vehicles yellow. Government vehicles bear the letters SMZ for Swahili Serikali ya Mapinduzi ya Zanzibar (Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar). There are also various special codes for other administrative bodies. Previously, black and later white license plates based on the ZNZ 1234 pattern were used in Zanzibar.
