history

In 1698 the Imam of Muscat conquered the island from the Portuguese . In 1832 it became the capital of the Sultanate of Oman , to which it belonged until the sultanate was divided in 1860. The sultanate traditionally used a red flag. In 1890 Zanzibar became a British protectorate. However, since Zanzibar did not become a colony and was under the responsibility of the British Foreign Office, a British colonial flag based on the Red Ensign was never introduced. But there was an emblem of the British representation in Zanzibar, which was carried in the center of the Union Jack : a dhow with a red flag on the stern, above the crown of the Empire.

On December 10, 1963, Zanzibar received its independence as a sultanate. Its national flag showed two golden cloves on a green disc on a red background. On January 17, 1964, the sultan was overthrown. A horizontal tricolor in black, yellow and blue was then used only briefly . It was quickly replaced by a blue-black-green tricolor, which also had a narrow white stripe on the leech. The flag is derived from that of the Afro-Shirazi Party , which also featured a golden hoe in the black stripe on the tricolor (without a white stripe).

The People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba used this national flag until it rose in Tanzania. After that, this flag only had an unofficial status, but was used, for example, by sports fans. Only in 2005 did Zanzibar receive its own flag again as an official symbol.

Pemba

On January 18, 1964, Pemba was briefly proclaimed its own People's Republic, which carried a red flag with the green outlines of the island. Pemba united with Zanzibar in January.
