The party was an association of the Shirazi Party as a representative of the long-established Africans in Zanzibar and the Afro Party , which was formed by immigrants from the mainland. Abeid Amani Karume was chairman and co-founder . The aim was to represent interests against the Arab and Indian population groups who held political and economic power on Zanzibar.

The party led the coup against the Sultan in 1964, together with the radical left Umma Party , and proclaimed the People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba on January 12, 1964 . On April 26, the People's Republic and the neighboring state of Tanganyika merged to form Tanzania .

After the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) was declared a unity party on the mainland in 1965, the ASP united with it to form the new unity party Chama Cha Mapinduzi . This became the only legal party in Tanzania and, according to the constitution, was subordinate to parliament and the government. President Julius Nyerere became chairman of the Unity Party . Karume became the first vice president. He was killed in an assassination attempt in 1972.
