Origin and meaning of the national flag

The Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) used a flag with three vertical stripes in green-black-green. Green symbolized the fertility of the country and the black stripe represented the African population. When Tanganyika gained independence from Great Britain on December 9, 1961 , the flag of the TANU was adopted as the national flag and gold fringes were added to represent the rich natural resources.

The neighboring island of Zanzibar carried a blue-black-green, horizontally striped flag when it gained independence. When the two states were united to form the Republic of Tanzania, the Tanganyika flag was shifted diagonally and the lower green became a blue, which now represents the Indian Ocean.

Colonial flags of Tanganyika

The flag of the German-East African Society could be named as the first flag of Tanganyika . On it was a black cross on a white field, in the upper left rectangle of which there were five white stars on a red field, which symbolize the constellation of the Southern Cross .

During the time as the German colony of German East Africa , the Reich Service Flag (or "Reich Colonial Flag") was displayed on public buildings. The military (the Schutztruppe ) often marched under the so-called " Reich War Flag ". There were plans for their own flags and coats of arms for the German colonies, such as the adjacent "Flag Draft for German East Africa". However, these designs were never officially introduced.

With the change to the British colony of British Tanganyika blew 1920-1961 a red flag with the Union Jack in the Gösch and a giraffe head .

Zanzibar

Main article: Flag of Zanzibar

In the 19th century, the Sultanate of Zanzibar always carried a red flag. In 1963 the colors blue-black-green finally appeared as the flag of Zanzibar. With the union with the mainland, Zanzibar initially no longer had its own flag. It was not until January 10, 2005 that it received its own flag as an official symbol.
