Description and meaning
The national flag shows from top to bottom look at the colors green, red and blue.
- Green stands for the fertility of the land or agriculture
- Blue stands for the abundance of the sea (both colors are divided into right triangles)
- Red stands for the spilled blood of the struggle for freedom (in the middle in an isosceles triangle)
- In the red triangle stands a yellow olive branch surrounded by a wreath of olive branches of the same color. The olive branch wreath shows 14 leaves on the left and right.
This symbol can be traced back to the coat of arms during the subordination of Eritrea to the administration of Ethiopia from 1952 to 1962. It was abolished when it was annexed by Ethiopia. Other sources speak of a reference of the symbol to the UN's commitment to the independence of Eritrea.
The seal , which fulfills the function of a national coat of arms, has a different shape, even though it also contains the olive branch wreath.
1: 2 ? Flag of the Autonomous Region of Eritrea from 1950 to 1962 (unofficial until 1993)
