Waving flag

The flag of Mozambique is based on the old flag of the freedom movement FRELIMO ( Frente de Libertação de Moçambique ). This in turn was inspired by the colors of the South African freedom movement ANC . These have the following meaning:

  • Green stands for agriculture
  • Black symbolizes the black continent
  • Yellow stands for the country's ore wealth
  • White is representative of justice and peace
  • Red is a reminder of the revolutionary struggle against colonialism

The Kalashnikov with bayonet in the emblem stands for defense and vigilance, the hoe for farmers and their products and the book for education. The star stands for the spirit of internationalism in which the country finds itself.

The flag was officially introduced on May 1, 1983, replacing the previous version, which used the same colors and similar symbols and was introduced in 1975.

The colors red-yellow-green, often combined with black and / or white, are the pan-African colors that can be found on many African flags.

history

Maputo's flag around 1900

During the colonial period in what was then Portuguese East Africa, the flag of Portugal was used. In 1967 there was a proposal for the colonies to add the respective coat of arms of the colony to the flag of Portugal .

During the preparations for independence, the FRELIMO flag was hoisted next to the Portuguese flag. With the release of independence, a new flag was adopted. In 1982 the coat of arms of Mozambique was changed , but since a new flag was introduced in 1983, the probability is high that the flag has not been changed by then. In April 1983, the FRELIMO flag was reintroduced, which had a simplified form of the national coat of arms on a star in the triangle, as was already found in the flag from 1975, shortly afterwards the emblem was further simplified to the current version.
