The flag of the Republic of the Congo was originally introduced on August 18, 1959 and, after a phase with a socialist flag, was restored on June 10, 1991.
meaning
The national flag is in the pan-African colors :
- Red stands for the fight for freedom
- Yellow symbolizes the natural riches of nature
- Green stands for the nature of the country
Historic flag
In 1968 Major Marien Ngouabi became the new president. He transformed the Congo into a people 's republic in 1969 and leaned politically to the Soviet Union . With its disintegration in 1991, the Congo became a republic again and the flag was changed back to that of 1959.
The flag was introduced in 1970 and is heavily based on the flag of the Soviet Union .
- Red and the five-pointed star represent socialism .
- The hammer symbolizes the working class and the hoe the peasants, crossed to represent their union, as the prosperity of the country depends on them.
- The branches symbolize the nature of the land and peace.
The colors red, yellow and green that appear in the flag also stand for the pan-African colors .
