The colors green, yellow and red are considered Pan-African colors and refer to the considerable proportion of the black African population. The color green and the crescent moon symbolize Islam , the main religion of the country. The stripes added in 2017 symbolize the blood of those who fought for Mauritania's independence.

history

Flag of Mauritania 1959-2017
Waving old flag of Mauritania

Only in 1958 did the colonial power of France allow its own symbols for its African possessions. The former national flag was established with the constitution of March 22, 1959 and officially introduced on April 1 of the same year. The constitution of July 12, 1991 confirmed the appearance of the flag. A flag law, which precisely specifies the structure, was missing. On August 5, 2017, President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz held a referendum that, among other constitutional amendments, provided for a new flag with two additional red stripes. The referendum was successful and the change came into effect on August 6th.
