The Lesotho flag was officially introduced on October 4, 2006. There were two previous flags. Its current form was adopted on the 40th anniversary of the country's independence.
Description and meaning
The national flag is horizontally striped in blue, white and green. They have a width ratio of 3: 4: 3. The white stripe is covered with a stylized black mokorotlo , a conventional Basotho headgear that is said to have been modeled on the shape of the Qiloane mountain .
The meanings of the colors were carried over from the previous flag, even if the color tones were changed. They are based on the country's motto: white stands for peace ( Khotso ), blue symbolizes rain ( Pula ), and green stands for prosperity ( Nala ).
history
The national flag has seen several changes since independence on October 4, 1966. The first flag, unveiled on September 30, 1966, adopted the colors of the Basotho National Party and featured a mokorotlo. The width of the strips had a ratio of 1: 1: 8. After a military coup which replaced the ruling Basotho National Party , a new flag was introduced on January 17, 1987. The light brown emblem showed a traditional Sotho shield in front of 19th century weapons, an Assegai spear and a Kierrie battle club.
Royal flag
The king's flag followed the changes in the national flag. But it always showed the coat of arms of Lesotho .
