meaning

Waving national flag of Senegal

Red is reminiscent of the struggle for independence, stands for the blood spilled in the colonial era and denotes socialism. Yellow stands for blooming landscapes and is a sign of the wealth that comes from working together. Green expresses the hope for a good future and progress and at the same time stands for the largest three religious groups in the state (Muslims, Christians, traditionalists ).

history

The national flag comes from a time when Senegal and French Sudan formed the so-called Mali Federation in early 1959 . At that time there was a stylized black human figure in the yellow stripe, the Kanaga symbol . When Senegal left this federation and became a republic, people were replaced by a green star of freedom. Mali still uses the tricolor without symbols in the yellow stripe as its national flag. The stripe flag is obviously inspired by the French tricolor and, through the pan-African colors, expresses the bond with Ghana and Guinea , whose flags arrange the colors of the tricolor differently. However, the colors of the flag were already used in the Senegalese party flags.
