The Mali ideogram (also Kanaga symbol ) was propagated in 1959 by the short-lived Mali Federation (consisting of the former French colonies French Sudan and Senegal ), which saw itself as the crystallization center of the pan-African idea, as a symbol of Négritude .

Léopold Sédar Senghor , Speaker of the Parliament of the Mali Federation, explained the Mali ideogram as follows:

“This black person, our closest relative - it's about advancing him in all areas so that he is not just a consumer but also a producer of culture. The human being remains our highest concern; he determines our measure. This is what the person who appears on the Mali flag indicates, rooted in the earth and turned towards heaven. "
