Description and meaning
The flag of Mali is based on the French tricolor and is reminiscent of the French colonial era. Like many other African states, Mali has chosen the so-called pan - African colors for its national flag, which were previously the party colors of the Rassemblement Démocratique Africain (RDA). They mean the following:
- Green ( PMS 355) represents the nature of the land.
- Yellow (PMS 109) stands for natural resources and purity.
- Red (PMS 032) represents the blood that was shed in the struggle for independence.
history
The original flag of Mali was adopted on April 4, 1959, and carried a black human figure in the middle, the so-called Kanaga symbol , which was also found in the flag of French Sudan . It is believed that this figure was added through the initiative of Léopold Sédar Senghor , later President of Senegal . After Senegal split off from the Mali Federation , the symbol was abolished under pressure from the Muslim part of the population who, because of their beliefs, did not approve of any representation of people.
Ghana's flag was the template for the Ghana-Guinea-Union ( Union of African States ) from November 28, 1958. It differed from the Ghanaian flag only in that it contained two stars. After Mali joined the Union in April 1961, a third star was added, and the number of stars should be increased accordingly for further accession (which never happened). The project ended in 1962.

Azawad
On April 6, 2012, rebel Tuareg declared the independence of northern Mali under the name of Azawad . The flag of the MNLA is used: a horizontal tricolor in green, red and black with a yellow triangle on the leech (side of the mast). A blog describes the colors red, green and yellow as being in the tradition of the pan-African colors. Black was taken from the flag of the Palestinians , who are described as allies and in the same struggle for statehood against an overpowering military power.
Others
Guinea uses the same tricolor as its flag , but with the red stripe on the leech.
