The flag of South Sudan is originally the flag of the Sudanese People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and was adopted as the flag of the Autonomous Region of South Sudan in 2005 . With independence on July 9, 2011, it became the national flag of South Sudan.

Description and meaning

The model for the flag was the national flag of Kenya . According to the official description:

  • Black for the people of Africa
  • White for the peace that has cost many lives
  • Red for the blood of honorable freedom and justice fighters who gave their lives in the many years of conflict left
  • Green for the agricultural potential of the fertile soils and equatorial vegetation that adorn South Sudan
  • Blue for the Nile , the main source of life, not only for South Sudan, but also for the north as far as Egypt
  • the star for the unity of the state of South Sudan.

According to the official announcement, the flag represents a nation of black Africans, forever united in the struggle for peace and prosperity for all people in South Sudan.

The orientation of the star is inconsistent. With some flags a point points into the corner of the upper leech (top left on the mast), with others straight up. A flag with a straight star was placed at the independence celebration.

history

Historic flag? Former flag of the South Sudanese independence movement (unsafe)

The flag has long been in use with the South Sudanese independence movement, but is now used by all political forces in South Sudan as a symbol of the "nation". In the 1990s, the star's color may have changed from red to today's yellow.

Under the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan of 2007, a law regulates the appearance of the flag, which is determined by the national government. The constitution thus follows the agreements of the Naivasha Agreement .

After the independence referendum in South Sudan in 2011 , 9 July 2011 was set as the independence date. It was disputed beforehand whether the flag should be retained or replaced. It was partially criticized as not politically neutral, since it is also the flag of the political party SPLA. On March 22, 2011, the South Sudanese cabinet decided to keep the flag.

particularities

The flag of South Sudan, along with the flag of South Africa and the flag of Dominica, is the only national flag in the world that contains six colors, if one ignores the coats of arms integrated in some flags.
