The flag of the Sahara Democratic Arab Republic ( Arabic علم الجمهورية العربية الصحراوية الديمقراطية) is in the pan-Arab colors black, white, green and red and is the flag of the freedom movement POLISARIO .

  • Black stands for death
  • White symbolizes peace,
  • Green stands for life.

Crescent and star refer to Islam. Possibly these are based on the flag of Algeria , since the POLISARIO was originally based strongly on the Algerian regime.

The special thing about this flag is that the leech is on the right instead of the left (from right to left in accordance with the Arabic script direction) and the crescent and star are missing on the back. However, the flag is often shown in the mirrored version. Rumors say that if the Democratic Arab Republic of the Sahara is recognized internationally, the flag will be flipped so that green will be on top and black on the bottom.

The flag was officially introduced for the proclamation of the Sahara Democratic Arab Republic on February 27, 1976.

The reverse of the flag of Western Sahara is identical to the reverse of the flags of Palestine and the Ba'ath Party .
