history

Only the flag of Spain was used during the Spanish colonial period . The colony or the overseas province did not have its own flag.

The flag was originally introduced for independence on October 12, 1968. In the beginning there were no clear regulations as to when the coat of arms had to be used in the flag, which is why there were also versions without a coat of arms in the first few years. During the dictatorship of Francisco Macías Nguema between 1973 and 1979 the emblem was changed. It showed a rooster, a sword, several traditional, African tools for field work and next to the motto of the country in a banner another banner with the word Trabajo (work). This coat of arms was also used in the flag from 1978. Since then, it has been mandatory to use the coat of arms in the flag. On August 21, 1979, after the overthrow of Nguema, the old coat of arms was officially reintroduced and also included in the national flag.

The independence movement Grupo Nacionalista Bubi 1 de Abril, which emerged from the Bubi people , uses a blue-white-green tricolor with a four-pointed black star in the center of the white stripe.
