The flag of Algeria ( Arabic علم الجزائر, DMG ʿAlam al-Ǧazāʾir ) was adopted on July 3, 1962. It consists of two vertical stripes of equal size, green on the left and white on the right. In the center of the flag is a red crescent moon and a red, five-pointed star.

meaning

White symbolizes purity and the color green symbolizes Islam . The Crescent has established itself as well as in many other countries with a Muslim majority along with the star as a symbol of Islam, the crescent moon in the Algerian flag is somewhat more closed than in the flags of some other Muslim countries.

history

The national flag almost corresponds to the flag of the Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) in which the crescent moon and star were smaller. It is believed that the flag was used by Abd el-Kader in the 19th century , although according to other sources, Abd el-Kader fought under a white flag. It is more likely that the Algerian flag was designed by Messali Hadj in 1928 , supposedly modeled on the flag of the former Rif Republic . The Algerian biographer Achour Cheurfi , on the other hand, argues that the Algerian flag was only designed in April 1945 by Chadli El Mekki , Chawki Mostefai and Hocine Asselah . The Front de Liberation Nationale adopted the flag in 1954, and in 1958 the flag became the symbol of the Provisional Algerian Republic.

In nominal terms, Algeria was part of the Ottoman Empire until it was conquered by France and carried its flag . After the conquest by France, the flags of France were used in Algeria - in 1830 the flag of the kingdom, from 1834 the tricolor .
