The flag of Ceuta goes back to an old flag of Lisbon . As the flag of the Lisbon city saint San Vicente with the colors of the Dominicans , it stood for the Portuguese capital, but was also used for the Kingdom of Portugal . In fact, the black and white change of position corresponds exactly to the current flag of Lisbon. Portugal was the owner of Ceuta from 1415 to 1580, de jure until 1640. In an atlas by Jorge Reinel (1540) there is also a square, white and green Portuguese maritime trade flag with an applied cross of the Ordem dos Cavaleiros de Cristo , a Christian order. The eight-fold stand change (with a shield on top) later became the most common form of Portuguese city flags . The official flag of Ceutas still carries the Portuguese national coat of arms , but with a different arrangement of the 7 golden castles: The Portuguese has a castle at the top in the middle instead of at the top. The coat of arms is also crowned by a marquis crown .
