Officially accepted: March 1, 1983

The flag of the Balearic Islands was introduced on March 1, 1983.

Description and meaning

As a former part of the Crown of Aragon , the Catalan Senyera serves as the basis of the flag. The flag of the Balearic Islands is a yellow flag cloth striped horizontally with four red stripes of equal width. The yellow stripes also have the same width and correspond to the red ones. The purple jack shows a silver five-tower tinned castle with open windows and gate. The jack occupies a quarter of the flag. It shows a castle, a reference to the coat of arms of Palma de Mallorca , the capital of the region. The castle is the royal Almudaina castle palace that still serves as the residence of the Spanish king when he is in Mallorca.

history

A book from 1350 lists Mallorca with a green and black vertical striped flag. Or maybe this was just the flag of the ruling Burdil family . The current flag was in use earlier, for example in the Second Spanish Republic (1936-1939), but after the victory of General Franco , the use of the flag was banned. In the last years of the dictatorship, however, their use was again tolerated.
