description

The basis of the flag of Aragon is the Senyera , the flag of Catalonia . It consists of five yellow and four red horizontal stripes. The coat of arms of Aragon is offset towards the leech .

history

Iñigo Arista (* 781; † 852), the first king of Pamplona , who ruled as far as Aragon, had a silver cross on a blue background on his coat of arms and his banner.

In 1096 Peter I of Aragon adopted a white flag with a red Georgian cross and four Moorish heads, as they can still be seen in the coat of arms of Aragon today. They stand for the four Moorish kings that Peter defeated in the Battle of Alcoraz in 1095. In 1137 Petronella of Aragón , daughter of the Aragonese King Ramiro II , was betrothed to Raimund Berengar IV. , Count of Barcelona . The Moorish flag of Aragon became the flag of naval warfare, while the Senyera became Barcelona's flag of the United Kingdom. It was only Jakob I who switched to the red and gold stripes at sea in 1263, which were then used as the naval war flag until 1516. The Moorish flag can still be found today as the flag of Sardinia .

In May 1977, a "provisional flag" was adopted as the first official flag by the three provincial governments ( diputaciones ) as part of the drive for autonomy . The elected Diputación General de Aragón finally adopted the current flag in 1982 and legally established it on April 2, 1984.
