The flag of the Spanish Autonomous Community of Castile and León was established in Article 5 of Law 4/1983 on the autonomous status of Castile and León on February 25, 1983.

description

The flag is quartered. In the first and fourth fields a golden castle with three battlements , black masonry and blue wall openings on a red background. In the second and third fields a soaring, purple lion on a silver background with a golden crown and red tongue and claws. Its representation is modernized compared to its historical model. According to the law, it flies to the right of the Spanish flag on all official occasions .

origin

The flag is modeled on the flag of the Kingdom of Castile and León, which was in use between 1230 and 1516. This also blew on Christopher Columbus ' ships when he discovered America. This coat of arms banner was created by merging the banners of the two kingdoms. Its elements can also be found in today's coat of arms of Spain .

Other flags of Castile and Leon

Before the autonomy status was achieved, the castle motif on a dark red background was used in Castile.

A myth, however, is the use of the castle on a purple flag, the Pendón Morado de Castilla or Pendón de los Comuneros at the beginning of the 16th century. The Comuneros , who rebelled against Charles I at the time , used a purple flag, which led to misinterpretation due to the name. In fact, the flag was red to dark red. The misunderstanding is widespread, however, so that, for example, Castilian nationalists use this purple flag, since they see purple as the national color. Due to this misconception, the official flag of the Second Spanish Republic also contained a purple stripe as a symbol of Castile.

In addition to the coat of arms banner, a dark red flag with the coat of arms of Castile-León is also used as the official banner .
