Barcelona city flag

The city of Barcelona has been using a coat of arms banner since April 13, 2004 , which shows the Senyera stripes as a symbol of the Catalan royal family, as well as the St. George's Cross ( Sant Jordi ), which was the original symbol of the city. As early as April 11, 1984, the Catalan Flagship Association (Associació Catalana de Vexil·lologia ACV) proposed it as the city's flag, as it was already in use in the 15th century. It was officially introduced as the city flag on May 3, 1906 , but was later abolished. From 1984 a similar flag was in use, but did not show the historically correct number of four red stripes in the Senyera. On September 25, 1996, a new flag was introduced that no longer contained the Senyera, which led to angry protests from the population. Therefore, the flag was abolished on December 20 of the same year and replaced by a flag that carried the Senyera as a background. A ceremonial flag from 1996 showed a flag that carried the same diamond symbol on a blue background.

Another variant of the Senyera is the Estelada , which is preferred by the Catalan independence movement. Catalan nationalists use the Estelada Blava , a Senyera with a blue triangle on the leech and a white star, while the Estelada Groga with a yellow triangle and red star is more of the left-wing camp. A version in the style of the flag of the United States ( Estado Aragones ) is also in use.
