Estelada Vermella

The Estelada is a widespread continuation of the Senyera , the official flag of the autonomous Spanish region of Catalonia . The Estelada also embodies the entire so-called Països Catalans , i.e. in addition to Catalonia also the (at least partially) Catalan-speaking region of Valencia , the Balearic Islands and parts of Aragon . The Estelada serves as a symbol of the independence of Catalonia and is used by the independence advocates.

The flag is adorned with four red stripes on a gold or yellow background and a blue triangle with a white star. A distinction is made between the Estelada Blava mentioned above and the Estelada Vermella or Groga , in which the triangle is yellow with a red star in the middle.

The Estelada is of crucial importance in the struggle for the independence of Catalonia. For some of the Catalans, it is more than just a flag, but rather a symbol of the national solidarity and strength of the Catalonia region. It stands for the independence of the Catalan language Català, the Catalan culture and the people in general. The Estelada was first presented in Catalonia in 1918. The Cuban national flag , which is also decorated with a star, served as a template .

The Estelada Blava stood for the pursuit of state independence, while the Estelada Vermella became a symbol for a socialist Catalonia, which by no means had to be a state in its own right. These ideological differences blurred at the beginning of the 21st century, however, the Estelada of all stripes became a symbol for all political groups for the desired secession from the Kingdom of Spain.

Demarcation

Spain and Spanish Unionists, on the other hand, use the Senyera , which differs from the Estelada in the absence of a star and triangle, as the flag of Catalonia .
