Cardedeu is a Catalan city in the province of Barcelona in northeastern Spain . It is located in the comarca of Vallès Oriental .
Location and climate
Cardedeu is located northeast of the capital of the comarca (district town) Granollers in a wide valley, the pre-coast depression, which leads to the coast from the Catalan Coastal Mountains ( Catalan Serralada Litoral Catalana ) and to the inland from the massif of Montseny , part of the Catalan Pre-Coast Mountains ( Catalan Serralada Prelitoral Catalana ) , is limited.
history
Due to the favorable location in the pre-coastal depression on the Via Augusta, the settlement of the region can be documented up to Roman times. Cardedeu itself is of medieval origin. The first written mention of Cardedeu dates back to the year 941 as Carotitulo. In 1272 the settlement, then called Cardedol, was granted market rights by the king and the right to build a city wall. It was decreed that the king's path leading from Barcelona to France should pass through Cardedeu. The noble families Montells i Lledó were entrusted with the control of compliance with the law. In 1448, a severe earthquake struck that had its epicenter between Cardedeu and Llinars del Vallès . Several hundred people fell victim to it and the church tower collapsed.
In modern times, the city developed more and more into an important location due to its strategically favorable location. It was captured and burned down in armed conflicts (e.g. Guerra dels Segadors ). Despite everything, the city prospered and reached a population of 1,085 according to the Floridablanca census in 1787. With the construction of the railway line from Barcelona to Sant Celoni and on to Girona, the phase of economic prosperity continued. This favorable development was only interrupted by repeated interventions by Carlist troops, who marched into Cardedeu in 1873 and set fire to it. From 1880 the city developed into a tourist destination for summer visitors from Barcelona and other cities. During this time, many buildings of the Catalan Art Nouveau ( Modernisme ) were built. Cardedeu quickly became a popular residential town due to its scenic location. The old trees stretching through the entire city represent one of the characteristics of a garden city .
Culture and sights
In addition to a large number of architecturally valuable modernist buildings , remains of Romanesque and Gothic architecture can be found in Cardedeu. The first local television station (Televisió de Cardedeu) in Spain was founded in Cardedeu in 1979 and began regular broadcasting in 1980.
Economy and Transport
Cardedeu is right on the AP-7 motorway, which runs from Barcelona to Girona and on to France. There is a public transport connection with Rodalies Barcelona once an hour between Barcelona and Cardedeu or to the north in the direction of Sant Celoni .
