The Montseny is a mountain range in the Spanish autonomous region of Catalonia , northeast of Barcelona .

In 1978 the massif was designated as a natural park, in Catalan this is called Parc Natural del Montseny . The nature park is 301.2 km² and includes 18 municipalities, which are spread over the three comarques Vallès Oriental , Selva and Osona .

The name Montseny comes from the Latin : Monte Signum ("Signalberg") it was called, probably because its distinctive profile could (and can) be seen from many places in Catalonia.

The highest point is the Turó de l'Home with 1706 meters in the Vallès Oriental and many other peaks exceed the 1,000-meter mark. From around 1875 the mountains were discovered by botanists and nature lovers, but also by poets and writers and have been a popular destination ever since.

The natural conditions on the one hand and the cultural influence of the people on the other, who have left their mark there in the form of churches, castles, farmsteads and paths, have led UNESCO to designate the entire area as a biosphere reserve.

The nature park administration is located in Fontmartina , Fogars de Montclús municipality .
