The flag of São Tomé and Príncipe was first hoisted as the national flag on the occasion of the country's independence on July 12, 1975 and was officially introduced on November 5 of the same year.

meaning

The national flag uses the Pan-African colors . Green stands for the vegetation and agriculture, red for the blood that was shed in the struggle for the independence of the island state and yellow symbolizes the cultivation of cocoa , which makes up 93% of the country's export goods. The two stars are symbols of the two islands that make up the republic .

Flag was proposed but never officially adopted? Flag proposal from 1967

During the colonial period, the flag of Portugal was used on São Tomé and Príncipe . In 1967 there was a proposal for the colonies to add the respective coat of arms of the colony to the flag of Portugal . The proposal was not implemented.

Today's national flag is based on the flag of the independence movement MLSTP, introduced in 1972, and is held in the pan-African colors .
