Description and meaning

The width of the strips is in the ratio 3: 1: 8: 1: 3. The colors have the following meaning:

  • Red represents the battles in the past.
  • Yellow symbolizes the natural wealth of mineral resources.
  • Blue stands for peace.

The shield is the emblem of the Emasotsha regiment, it also appears in Eswatini's coat of arms and is covered by an ox skin. The two colors black and white are intended to show that members of the black and white peoples live together in harmony. The shield is reinforced by spears and a staff with bundles of feathers. These bundles of feathers from certain bird species are reserved for the king and symbolize the rule of the king.

history

In the National Museum in Mbabane there is a depiction of a flag that was carried in 1894 by the " Triumvirate Government of the Swazi, Boers and British". It was probably waged until the Boer Wars and the subsequent final annexation by the British. After that there was no flag for Swaziland, only the Union Jack was used .

Today's national flag goes back to the flag of the Swazi Pioneer Corps , awarded in 1941 , which served on the British side during World War II . The design in its current form, however, was designed in 1954 by Emily Shongue , the cousin of King Sobhuza II. On the occasion of King Sobhuza II's oath on April 25, 1967, the flag was hoisted for the first time and after registration in the London Heraldry on October 30 in a slightly modified form officially established.
