Description and meaning

The flag consists of two horizontal stripes of equal size: light blue above and light green below. The stripes are interrupted on the left edge by a white isosceles triangle in which a red five-pointed star is shown.

The light blue is the traditional color of the (Somali) Issa , green represents the traditional color of the (once strictly Islamic) Afar . (Above light blue and below green should have already formed the flag of the former Afar Sultanate Raheita .) The white triangle stands for peace and the red star symbolizes the unity of the five districts. The colors can also be interpreted as symbols for the earth (green), the sea and the sky (blue) as well as for peace (white). The red star represents the unity of the country. Light blue is also included in the flag of Somalia and green is generally considered the color of Islam.
