The flag of Sudan was designed by Abdalrahman Ahmad Aljali , a graduate of the art school.

Description and meaning

The reference to the Arab liberation flag is documented by the pan-Arab colors .

  • Green stands for Islam , the Fatimid dynasty and for the prosperity and prosperity of the state.
  • Red is the color of revolution, socialism , and progress and stands for the sacrifices that the struggle for the nation state cost.
  • White symbolizes peace, light and optimism and is reminiscent of the white revolutionary flag of the 1924 League of the White Flag
  • Black indicates that the state belongs to the “black continent” (the Arabic word “Sudan” means “black”). In addition, black was the main color of the flag of Muhammad Ahmad , a Sudanese people's leader from the 19th century who posed himself as a Mahdi .

The tip of the green triangle protrudes a third of the length of the flag into the white stripe.

The flag was introduced in connection with the seizure of power by the Sudanese Socialist Union under Jafar Muhammad an-Numeiri in 1969. It was officially hoisted for the first time on May 20, 1970. The previous flag has been in use since Sudan's independence in 1956.
