Mozambique coat of arms

The coat of arms of Mozambique , introduced in 1990, is based on the national coat of arms of the Soviet Union . It shows a yellow cog wheel surrounded by corn on the cob and sugar cane , in which, in front of a red sun and above a map of Mozambique including blue wavy bars ( Strait of Mozambique ), a Kalashnikov crossed with a hoe is in front of an open book. The wreath with a red tape bound about, is at the bottom of the country's name "República de Moçambique". At the top, between the corn plant and sugar cane, there is also a red star .

Corn on the cob and sugar cane symbolize agriculture and the nature of the country, the cog wheel the workers , the book the social class of the intelligentsia , the hoe the peasant class, the Kalashnikov the country's struggle for independence and the red star socialism . The red sun symbolizes the south of Africa and the hope for a better life.

Historical coat of arms

The former Portuguese colony of Mozambique already had a coat of arms before 1935 that corresponded to that of other Portuguese colonies. In 1951 Mozambique was converted into a Portuguese overseas province and the three-part coat of arms, which had been in effect since 1935, was adapted by changing the name of the area. It shows a heraldic shield on a golden armillary sphere crowned with a wall .

In the first field there are five blue labels with five silver discs on them, the so-called quinas ; in the second field there is a silver bundle of green arrows tied with a red ribbon; in the base of the shield there are green-silver wave beams. Underneath there is a tape on which the name of the colony, or from 1951 overseas province, can be read.

When Mozambique became independent in 1975, it adopted a coat of arms that differed in subtleties from those used today, such as the brown color of the map, the color and design of the water, the tape with the state name " República Popular de Moçambique " and the whole completely round design. In 1982 the coat of arms was finally brought into the form still valid today and in 1990 the state name was changed to "República de Moçambique".
