Introduced March 14, 1962

The coat of arms of Togo was proclaimed on March 14, 1962 .

description

Two young red lions can be seen in the coat of arms, symbolizing the courage of the people. They hold bows and arrows, the traditional weapons, and by their position express the vigilance of the people to maintain their independence.

The bow and arrow call on all citizens to be active in defending the freedom of their country.

A golden heart shield with the letters RT (= République Togolaise) can be seen between the lions .

The Togolese flag is stuck on it twice .

The state motto can be read on the tape: Travail, Liberté, Patrie (work, freedom, fatherland).

There has been confusion about the coat of arms since the 1990s after the Togolese National Conference decided to change the motto, but without defining a binding text. Individual ministries and authorities then designed their own variants of the coat of arms. Among other things, one with the motto “Union, Paix, Solidarite” (unity, peace, solidarity). Different color variants and graphic designs were also used. A decision by the Togolese Constitutional Court in 2008 determined the binding form, design and text of the coat of arms.

history

Togo introduced a national coat of arms on March 14, 1962, which replaced the " replacement coat of arms ", the national flag in the form of a shield, which had been in use until then .
