The coat of arms of Cape Verde contains a circle in which the state name is written in Portuguese . The circle also contains a torch in a triangle. These symbols represent freedom and unity of the state. The ten stars that surround the circle symbolize, as in the state flag , the islands of Cape Verde.
Colonial coat of arms
In 1935 the colonies of Portugal received their own coat of arms . The coats of arms were designed uniformly. As common elements they showed the five quinas of the coat of arms of Portugal and five green waves on silver. As a separate component, Cape Verde showed a green field with three waves in silver. On it a black caravel with a white sail and gold decorations.
