The seal of Rwanda since 2002

The current seal of Rwanda was introduced on January 1, 2002 , along with a new flag and national anthem .

description

Agaseke, the traditional Rwandan basket with the pointed lid that basket makers weave from fine sisal fibers and is also called a basket of peace

The seal shows an Agaseke basket in the middle and two shields as traditional African symbols, but also a gear wheel, a sorghum and a coffee plant and in the top middle the sun, which is also shown in the flag.

The name of the country in Kinyarwanda - Repubulika y'u Rwanda , Republic of Rwanda - is on a gold banner at the top, and the motto is on a second gold banner at the bottom:

" Ubumwe, Umurimo, Gukunda Igihugu "
( Unity, work, patriotism )

The two shields represent patriotism and the defense of national sovereignty, as well as honesty and justice.

A green ring surrounding the seal and ending in a knot at the bottom symbolizes industrial development through joint efforts.

history

The previous coat of arms had been in effect since independence on July 1, 1962, but was no longer used because of its association with the genocide.

It showed a coat of arms with a hoe, sickle, bow and arrow, the country name and the country's motto:

" Liberté, Cooperation, Progrès "
( Freedom, collaboration, progress )

A dove above and an olive branch below the shield stood for peace, the tools for work and the weapons for defense.

In the background there were two red, yellow and green striped flags.
