Madeira coat of arms

The coat of arms of the autonomous region of Madeira shows a golden pole in the blue shield and in the middle a red paw cross covered with a common white cross (Cross of the Order of Christ ).

Shield holders are two seals . Over the coat of arms there are blue-gold helmet covers and an equally colored crest with a gold armillary sphere .

Under the coat of arms is a white ribbon with the motto in black capital letters "THE ILHAS AS CORN BELAS E LIVRES" ( "Of all the islands, the most beautiful and most free").

symbolism

The blue color stands for Madeira's island location, the yellow or golden color for the mild climate and for the areas of the island to which it owes its wealth. The Cross of the Order of Christ alludes to the fact that the island was discovered by two members of this military order who belonged to the court of Infante Henry the Navigator : João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira . It symbolizes the connection to Portugal .
