Since the founding of the Republic of Turkey , no official coat of arms has been used alongside the state flag . Instead, an emblem is used that shows the flag image (a crescent moon with a star), usually in a red oval, as it was already used in the Ottoman Empire. The moon is represented as a waning star.

The President's emblem, made up of 16 yellow stars and a yellow sun, is also often used in official matters .

Until the founding of the republic on October 29, 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , its predecessor, the Ottoman Empire , had a coat of arms that was officially introduced in 1876.
